COMMUNITY GARDEN

Pitney Meadows Children's Greenhouse & Gardens in Saratoga Springs

BY: Sandra A

Saratoga Springs, NY

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Pitney Meadows is a 154-year-old family farm recently acquired by a non-profit (PMCF) formed to preserve the 166 acres & create a community farming & agricultural resource center. Located in the City of Saratoga Springs, the farm is preserved by a conservation easement, hosts woodlots, protected streams, historic structures & 95 acres of prime farmland. Your funds will support implementation of a CHILDREN’S GREENHOUSE & GARDENS program integral to the core community education & teaching component of our mission. Gardening is a healthy, inexpensive activity for youth that brings them closer to nature, allowing them to interact with each other in a socially & physically productive way. They will have the opportunity to grow their own seedlings, raise & prepare healthy organic food for themselves & others. We offer opportunities to teach youth where food comes from, healthy eating, the environment, food issues, community importance, stewardship, business principles, & job/life skills.
