COMMUNITY GARDEN

Impact Garden

BY: Doree C

Temple, TX

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

We will use this grant to establish and maintain a community garden that will serve as an Urban Agriculture Center where there will be opportunities for growing vegetation, purchasing vegetation, outreach give away of vegetation, educational opportunities and Farmers Markets. This garden will serve primarily the East Temple community, especially when giving vegetation to families and children. East Temple is considered a food desert. According to the USDA a food desert is a community that is outside of a mile reach to a market or grocery store. East Temple has a great deal of corner stores that make processed and sugary foods available to its patrons. We want to alleviate the negative impact that these foods are having on East Temple youth and families. We also want to teach and empower the youth and their families to grow their own healthy foods that are grown without chemical processes.
