COMMUNITY GARDEN

East Snyder Community Garden

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

One in five children (20%) and just over one in ten (11%) of all people in Snyder County, do not have enough healthy food. (Feeding America 2014, Coalition Against Hunger 2013) We have donated two tons of produce to free food and meal programs. However, this is far from what we could share, if we had refrigeration on-site. The free food and meal programs accept produce mid-week, when many of us work. therefore some of our harvest is not shared. To address this timing problem, we will invest in a solar energy system and refrigerator ($4-6000). We will pick and refrigerate produce anytime gardeners are available, and donate all the surplus. We will upgrade our equipment to replace worn tools and include new large-scale sustainable gardening tools, improving our yield and freeing time for education. We lease three acres and can expand to seven. We are a public 501c3 with a $1500 budget. Our revenue sources are plot fees and sales of plant seedlings, rain barrels and bee houses.
