COMMUNITY GARDEN

Common Vision School Orchard Project

BY: Ray S

Oakland, CA

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Common Vision plants + maintains sustainable fruit orchards in low-income public schools + community gardens across California. With 250+ orchards and 9,000+ trees planted over the past decade, our orchards produce 160,000+ lbs of fresh, healthy fruit annually! Orchards take maintenance to yield optimally, + classroom teachers need training + easy-to-implement lessons to activate these outdoor classrooms. With this grant, Common Vision will: 1) Run trainings for teachers at 75 public schools, while working directly with thousands of students + providing critical seasonal tree care. 2) Create a schoolyard-specific, seasonal tree care video series; topics will include harvesting, irrigation + pruning, + will suggest student involvement opportunities. 3) Create easy-to-use, in-the-orchard lessons for seasonal observation, from flower to fruit to harvest. These materials will be a huge benefit to the coordinators of our orchards, + will also be a resource for educators across the country!
