COMMUNITY GARDEN

Coastal Roots Farm

BY: Sharyn G

Encinitas, CA

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Coastal Roots Farm (Farm) will use a grant from Seeds of Change to support its Produce Donation Program designed to promote community health and wellness and increase access to 1) healthy food and 2) nutrition education to those who need it most. Healthy habits are key determinants of health, but are hard to incorporate into daily life for those who never know where their next meal will come from or who are forced to choose cheaper, less nutritious foods to feed their family. The Farm will provide an average of four servings of produce, the suggested daily recommendation, to an estimated 4,000 individuals in North County, San Diego through: • Produce donations to the charitable food system via nonprofit partners: Community Resource Center, Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Jewish Family Service, and Kitchens for Good; and • The Farm’s Pay-What-You-Can Pop-Up Markets at Camp Pendleton for military families, and Vista Community Clinic for individuals from low-income backgrounds.
