SCHOOL GARDEN

Henry H. North Elementary School Garden

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

We would use this grant to improve our school garden. Our school garden has served the community for 21 years. Our garden is an outdoor classroom that provides 600+ students with hands-on learning opportunities. Students learn sound stewardship of nature through organic gardening, and develop healthy eating habits. Our children are far removed from understanding their food sources in our urban environment. Our garden provides an opportunity for a life-long connection with nature and sparking a fascination for growing whole foods, while helping to fight hunger by donating majority of the produce to the Lansing Food Bank, averaging 200+ pounds of produce per year. We make a difference through promoting volunteerism, team work, as well as organic gardening, composting, and recycling. Michigan schools have experienced a severe loss of funding due to government budget cuts. Our school has no money for a garden at all. We really appreciate this grant opportunity to help our garden flourish!
