HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

The mission of the resiliency garden is to promote and develop resiliency in Gardenhill’s emotionally, behaviorally, and socially at risk students. According to the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens, “The health benefits of gardening are well recognized. Gardening can have a positive impact on physical, mental and emotional well-being and is useful in helping people with special needs” The project’s goal is to use the skills and patience of gardening to build protective factors that affect self-esteem, confidence, a sense of belonging, and a sense of accomplishment through hard work. The children work in teams of three to four, and younger club members return the following year as potential leaders who then mentor and train new club members. Ten percent of the harvest is donated to families in need within our community. The garden has also become a calming place for all students when the need arises.
