SCHOOL GARDEN

Orchard Elementary Outdoor Learning Center

Rio Linda, CA

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

We will expand and establish a working school garden that would be fully accessible to our staff and students, in order to have real, hands-on learning experiences across the curriculum. This space would allow students an alternative, outdoor space to explore where our food comes from and deepen their knowledge of healthy foods and nutrition. Lessons in science, math, language arts, art, history and more would be integrated in the garden. The garden would provide a safe haven for students to begin to build experiences that support their needs and increase engagement in school. Older students will work with younger students as mentors and models to increase their positive social interactions, connections to the natural world, and learn about nutrition. This grant would help our Title 1 school fund the prep/set up of our area for our gardens, outdoor classroom space, farmer’s market stand, and create a space for students, families, and community members to gather and learn together.
