SCHOOL GARDEN

Southridge Outdoor Learning Facility

BY: Sarah A

Lewisville, TX

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Located in a food desert (a grocery store is not close enough to walk to) and with a population of over 70% on free/reduced lunch, Southridge Elementary services many children who being hunger is normal. The creation of the Southridge Outdoor Learning Facility will allow us to help service the students and families in our community with fresh fruits and vegetables that are typically not available to them. This grant will allow us to develop multiple gardening beds, plant more fruit tress, create a composed bin, and purchase a rain barrel (all of which are essential for our sustainability). The garden is an outreach program for our community, not only by supplying food, but also giving families time to spend together, teaching life skills, education on healthy eating and creating partnerships to strengthen the community we service.
