COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Children's Garden

BY: Gretchen S

Lima, OH

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

As the only public garden in Allen County, Ohio, the Children's Garden is a living classroom for children from 2 to 92. Our mission is to use the garden as a catalyst to provide research based educational learning to our community and greater Lima region by both hands on educational classes and through self-guided exploration. Funds will be used to upgrade garden installations such as replacing the decaying raised vegetable beds; hiring a professional arborist to treat our original Johnny Appleseed scion tree for fire blight; providing educational materials for our Kids Klasses, Growing Health Kids program; Hands on Habitat program; Brown Bag Educational Series and other programs and by upgrading signage in the garden to improve the self-guided experience. When the OSU Extension program was zero-funded in 2009, the Allen County Master Gardener Volunteers became responsible for 100% of the funding for the project and for all educational programming. Over 15,000 guests visited in 2016.
