SCHOOL GARDEN

South Jackson Elementary Scienhancement Farm

BY: Stephen L

Athens, GA

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

The grant would be used to create sustainable infrastructure for the Scienhancement garden program, a Kindergarten through fifth grade garden-based science class at South Jackson Elementary School. Updating the greenhouse with new base and plastic, installing irrigation, and creating protection from wildlife will: increase opportunities for nutrition and culinary activities in the classroom, supplement the cafeteria, add fresh foods to the Backpack Kids Weekend Meal program, and donate fresh food to the Northeast Georgia Food Bank for their Kids Meals and Mobile School Food Pantry programs. The program would provide monthly cooking classes for parents and students using produce grown in our garden/farm. The program receives no additional funding from the school district. It is self sustaining through events and individual contributions from the local Jackson County community. Events include the Taste of South and farm to table dinners, all led by Mr. Lush.
