COMMUNITY GARDEN

Buckets of Rain's Detroit/Highland Park Gardens

BY: Chris S

Highland Park, MI

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

The Buckets of Rain “Gardens on Glendale” serve two of Detroit/Highland Park's most disadvantaged groups: those living in the food deserts of the abandoned neighborhoods and the homeless. We seek funding to support our existing gardens and expand our growing capacity by clearing and maintaining more abandoned property and turning those lots into food production. Since 2012 we have farmed an acre of inner city land and provided tens of thousands of servings of vegetables to the homeless shelters of the Detroit Rescue Mission (DRM) and our neighbors. Our goals are to provide vegetables for as many of the 1 million meals served annually by the DRM (and other shelters) as possible, while providing the neighborhood the opportunity to participate in process of blight reduction and food production. You would also be helping us to provide free raised beds, compost, seedlings, and advice to our neighbors so they can grow food- victory garden style- in their own back yards.
