Rockford Middle School Garden

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

This grant would further enhance the garden STEM program at Rockford Middle. We want a raised bed garden, to double the straw bale garden to 80 bales and build a greenhouse for hydroponic and aquaponic food production. The greenhouse gives us an avenue to teach students about growing food in winter. The 4 garden types provide a unique opportunity for middle school agriculture students to have hands-on learning and dynamic demonstration gardens for the community. Student-led community workshops will showcase the gardens to aid in choosing which garden works best for in different scenarios. The gardens will be open to all for Summer Garden Nights throughout the summer. According to MN Food Share report, food stamp usage in our community has increased 132% so a significant amount of produce will be donated to the local food shelf. We hope to ensure that everyone has access to fresh, healthy produce and the ability to grow their food!
