COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Learning Garden @ Tom Graham Park

BY: Aislynn C

Corpus Christi, TX

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

GROW Local South Texas’ Learning Garden is located in a low income, low food access urban neighborhood and teaches growing, harvesting and sustainability techniques to volunteers, apprentices, an after school program, summer camps and the community as a whole. This grant will allow us to install a covered harvest area and rainwater catch system that will further our goals of education and food access. The rainwater catch will decrease our dependency on city water and allow for educational demonstrations on sustainable water management techniques. The harvest area will increase the efficiency of harvesting for the weekly Downtown Farmer’s Market and during classes and camps. More efficient harvests will increase food access to the community. The shade structure will also provide a necessary safety feature for the garden which operates year round in an area of the country where late summer months often reach over 100 degrees.
