SCHOOL GARDEN

Riverside Middle School Garden (RMSG)

BY: Peter W

Watertown, WI

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Our community has been through a lot. 15+% of our families experience food insecurity. Currently 46% of our kids get free/reduced lunch, up from 16% in 2000. Eating processed junk food is tied to poor health, behavior issues, and learning difficulties. This grant is vital to the 3000+ sq ft Riverside Middle School Garden (RMSG) continuing its 3-year history of promoting an emotionally, physically, and economically healthier community. With the help of 20 partners, 750+ seventh graders have planted, tended, and harvested their own food. They outreach to other communities teaching sustainable agriculture and unconventional techniques such as companion planting, straw bale, hügelkultur, and vertical gardens. This grant will provide an in-ground, gravity-fed, roof water harvesting and watering system that will continue our mission of sustainable, healthy eating while modeling an ecologically-minded and paradigm-shifting worldview.
