COMMUNITY GARDEN

Real Food Rising

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

“Real Food Rising made me more aware of how much energy is needed to grow and maintain our food”-Daniel (age 15). Real Food Rising is a youth farming program in Salt Lake City. We will use this grant to educate our community about sustainable agriculture, where food comes from and access to healthy food. In 2011, Real Food Rising transformed 1.25 acres of neglected land into an urban farm. Located in a food desert, 29.6% of households live below poverty, compared to 12.1% in Utah and 14.9% nationally. For food insecure residents who rely on emergency food, access to fresh produce can be lacking. Each year we employ a diverse group of teens who grow thousands of pounds of produce while gaining skills in job readiness, leadership and healthy living. Roughly 70% is donated to emergency food and 30% is sold at neighborhood farm stands. By increasing access to healthy food and providing youth job training, we are enhancing the environmental, economic, and social well-being of our community.
