Downtown Pittsfield Farmers Market

BY: Jessica C

Pittsfield, MA

As we head into our fourth season, this grant would allow us to expand programming and staffing that make a real impact on our community. Our market was started with the belief that everyone in our community should have access to healthy food. With 50% of our city residents low-income, we located the market in a neighborhood with even lower, rates; where over 80% of elementary school students qualify for free lunch; and where there are no grocery stores in walking distance. Our market crew is hired through a local youth anti-gang initiative. The teens gain valuable workplace experience and have a positive, paid activity each Saturday. Our Double Value Program is a money-matching program for low-income residents using SNAP, WIC and Senior FMNP benefits. For example, every dollar in benefits a mother spends, she receives an equal amount in coupons -- doubling her purchasing power. In just 13 weeks, the program put over $20,000 worth of fresh food on the tables of families in need.
